In Memory

Greg Mikkelsen

Greg passed away from a heart attack on February 10, 2025 at his home in La Quinta, California which he shared with his long time companion Christine Salcido.  Christine was with him when he passed.

Greg earned a BA in business administration from USC and an MBA from UC Berkeley.  He built a number of custom houses at Lake Tahoe.   Meanwhile on behalf of his birth family Greg managed for many years various commercial properties located in Santa Clara County.   Greg and Christine lived for years at Lake Tahoe, then for more years split their time between Tahoe and La Quinta before finally settling down full time in La Quinta.

In addition to Christine, Greg is survived by his sister Ingrid, his brother Eric and Ingrid and Eric's children and grandchildren.

Greg enjoyed playing golf, spending time with friends, a good steak, flying his plane, backpacking (in his earlier years) and rooting for the USC football team.

I was fortunate to have an extended conversation with Greg at our 50th reunion. He was always an interesting and thoughtful man. My condolences to Ingrid and the rest of the family.

A couple of Greg memories:  When we were in our 20s and early 30s, Greg, his brother Eric, his cousin Pete and I (and sometimes one or two others) took a number of backpack trips in the Sierra and Sawtooth mountains.  We carried heavy backpacks with food for several days and even carried some beer, which we cooled off in mountain streams.  Those hikes were a grind, but we loved it.

Also back in those days Greg, Pete and I took multiple road trips down to Mexico.  They were low budget affairs, sleeping and cooking in the desert and on the beach.  Our first trip south of the border is real memorable.  We drove an old stick-shift pickup truck down Baja before there was a paved road.  We were constantly shifting between first and second gear on a road that was beyond rocky.  The road was a beating, but we were out for some adventure and got all we wanted.  Eventually we reached our goal way down the peninsula:  a small sleepy beach town called Buena Vista and loved it there.

My wife Beth and I will be at the celebration.
